See Next Concerts Page for details ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Past Fundraising Events The choir has been very busy this year organising fundraising events, which have proved very effective as well as good fun! In March, there was a ceilidh at Langcliffe Village Hall which was not only well-attended, but also well-catered-for, with a magnificent Jacob’s Join supper provided by choir members. Those braving the dance floor were accompanied by ceilidh band Buttered Peas, fronted by flautist Richard Hargreaves, who also sings tenor with the choir! On 1st May, just two days after the royal wedding, the choir took charge of the famous Langcliffe Village Hall teas, under the title “A Right Royal Tea”, and raised a considerable amount for choir funds. A hard-working and thoroughly efficient team of choir members provided a constant supply of appetising cakes and savouries, plus the obligatory cups of tea, to any passing walker/tourist who happened to wander in. A combination of lovely sunshine and royal wedding fever boosted the customer count and made this an extremely worthwhile event. The choir will again be putting on afternoon teas at Langcliffe Village Hall on Sunday 25th September, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. which will be the last Langcliffe tea of the year. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Future Fundraising Events The next fundraiser will be a Come and Sing Messiah day on Saturday 15th October at Christ Church, Skipton. Singers are invited to come along, meet other singers from other choirs, have fun and enjoy singing this fantastic work. There will be organ accompaniment and the soloists are regular members of the Langcliffe Singers:
Sheila Hartley (soprano)
The recent alterations to Christ Church have turned it into a magnificent concert venue, tailor-made for a big performance of a big work and although perhaps October isn’t one of the traditional times to sing Messiah (Easter and Christmas being the more usual occasions), it is surely one of those pieces than can be listened to at any time. If you would like to come and sing, rehearsal starts at 2 p.m. We will be using the Watkins Shaw New Novello edition of the score – please bring your own copy. The event costs £10 to include light refreshments. If you would like to come to the evening concert, this starts at 7 p.m and also costs £10. On Saturday 5th November, there will be a Coffee Morning at Hellifield Institute, again to raise money for choir funds. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ New Concert announced for

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our Musical Director, Nigel Waugh, is a popular and respected musician, based in Settle. He took over in September 2009 and has prepared and conducted the choir for five successful concerts since then. In an extensive musical career, Nigel sang as a chorister in the choir of King’s College Chapel, Cambridge (conductor: David Willcocks). He gained the degree of Bachelor of Music at Edinburgh University and sang as a lay clerk at St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral. Whilst he worked in London, he sang in the choir of All Saints, Margaret Street and took singing lessons with Professor Roy Henderson. Coming to the North, Nigel obtained his teaching qualifications at Liverpool University. He sang for five years with BBC Northern Singers, and has also sung with the William Byrd Choir, the Louis Halsey Singers, the Gabrieli Consort and many other groups. Nigel has sung for most of his life in choirs and as a soloist. He has conducted several choirs in Cumbria and Yorkshire and has been conductor of Skipton Music Centre Choir and Orchestra for eight years. He works as a singing teacher for North Yorkshire County Council, has recently completed a book on the subject of Sight Singing and has composed a number of choral works including song cycles, pop cantatas and carols. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In 1993 the choir was fortunate to gain the services of Brian Heaton as accompanist. Brian studied piano at the London College of Music and, after graduation, studied accompaniment at post-graduate level at the same institution. He has participated in many master-classes with artists such as Roger Vignoles and has partnered a wide variety of players and singers including Nigel Kennedy with whom he performed in the presence of Sir Colin Davis. For many years he was the accompanist of Chiswick Choir one of West London’s leading amateur groups. For the past eighteen years has played for the Langcliffe Singers combining this with teaching and accompanying throughout the North West. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |
