Farewell to Tricia At the choir’s last concert of the 2008-09 season, we said farewell to Tricia Rees-Jones, our Musical Director for the past five years and only the second conductor in our 25-year history. The concert included a selection of works sung during the last 25 years, linked by a short historical commentary. At the end of the concert, we presented Tricia with a facsimile copy of Handel’s manuscript score of Messiah and sang (unrehearsed) a section from Brahms’ Requiem. Best wishes to Tricia for the future. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our New Conductor Our new Musical Director, Nigel Waugh, is a popular and respected musician, based in Settle. He takes over in September 2009. In an extensive musical career, Nigel sang as a chorister in the choir of King’s College Chapel, Cambridge (conductor: David Willcocks). He gained the degree of Bachelor of Music at Edinburgh University and sang as a lay clerk at St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral. Whilst he worked in London, he sang in the choir of All Saints, Margaret Street and took singing lessons with Professor Roy Henderson. Coming to the North, Nigel obtained his teaching qualifications at Liverpool University. He sang for five years with BBC Northern Singers, and has also sung with the William Byrd Choir, the Louis Halsey Singers, the Gabrieli Consort and many other groups. Nigel has sung for most of his life in choirs and as a soloist. He has conducted several choirs in Cumbria and Yorkshire and has been conductor of Skipton Music Centre Choir and Orchestra for eight years. He works as a singing teacher for North Yorkshire County Council, has recently completed a book on the subject of Sight Singing and has composed a number of choral works including song cycles, pop cantatas and carols. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
